School Background

  1. The school offers Science & Technology (S4-5) and Liberal Studies (ASL) and teachers have experiences in teaching both liberal studies and socio-scientific issues.
  2. In general, the students are proficient in using English language to communicate.
  3. The school offers Project Learning curriculum in junior secondary forms for developing students’ enquiry skills.
  4. There will be four secondary 4 classes in 2009. For Liberal Studies, the four classes will be divided in six groups and each group will be taught by a teacher.
Initial ideas in planning 3 year Liberal Studies curriculum
  1. All the six modules will be covered in the first two years. The cross-modular issues will be highlighted in Secondary 6.
  2. In Secondary 4, the issues from the modules 'Public Health', 'Energy Technology and the Environment' and 'Personal Development & Interpersonal Relationships' will be covered. In addition, issues related to quality of life in ‘Hong Kong Today’ will be studied.
  3. Students will mainly conduct Independent Enquiry Study (IES) in Secondary 5. However, curriculum time will be reserved to develop students' inquiry skills in Secondary 4.

Key Elements (for the 1st term of Secondary 4)

A. Enquiry & process skills

In the first term of Secondary 4, the curriculum will cover Module of Public Health. The key elements including both enquiry skills and content knowledge are as below.

  1. Identify main points in text with major concepts
  2. Identify, describe and explain trend and pattern in graphs and tables
  3. Evaluation of information in newspapers, including news report on survey results
  4. Formulating enquiry questions
  5. Generalizing factors from specific cases and apply to new issues
  6. Informed decision after considerations from multi-perspectives, e.g. views of different stakeholders / social groups

B. Key Elements (Public Health Module)

Understanding of Public Health

  • Factors affecting understanding of public health
  • Historical and contemporary cases

Development of medical technology

  • Risks and benefits of new medical technologies
  • Acceptance of new medical technologies by the public

Health information

  • Health information from different social groups
  • Evaluation of health information

Public health policy

  • Analysis of public health policies

Learning & Assessment Objectives

The students are expected to:

5.1 Identify the factors (including the evolution of scientific knowledge, educational level of citizens & availability of information) affecting the understanding of public health from contemporary or historical cases (2)
5.2 Apply the factors affecting understanding of public health to analyse contemporary issues appropriately, and provide examples/evidence to support arguments whenever appropriate (2)
5.3 Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of development of different medical knowledge in different cultures, e.g. degree of acceptance of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong (16)
5.4 Identify the values underlying different views (including moral, ethical, economical perspectives) stated or implied in acceptance of new medical technologies, such as gene therapy (5)
5.5 Identify contradictions and dilemmas from information related to controversial issues, and recognize the influence of personal (7)
5.6 Consider public health policies from perspectives of different social groups (including the roles of government, expert, commercial sector, patient, taxpayer) so as to draw conclusions (7)
5.7 Make judgments of reliability of health information based on a sound rationale, and identify the values underlying those information (13)
