Note: Similar to other parts of the world, the promotion of sustainable development in China is increasingly being taken up by non-governmental organisations, the local civil society and multilateral organisations. Global governance institutions (like the Kyoto Protocol) and the anti-globalization movement have become influential on the progress and direction of sustainable development.
