Introduction

Liberal Studies is one of the core subjects of the New Senior Secondary curriculum. To assist teachers with the internal assessment of the subject, the Liberal Studies Section, Curriculum Development Institute, has set up a depository of assessment items for teachers' reference and use.

The assessment items so developed include data-response questions and extended-response questions. Teachers may adapt the data and questions for each item and decide on the scores for each question based on their school-based consideration. To help teachers understand the focus of the questions and assess students' performance, a description on the "intention of assessment" is attached after each assessment item. It describes the question's assessment focuses, including the knowledge and concepts students should master, and skills they are expected to demonstrate. It also lists students' expected performance in "knowledge" and "skills" aspects for teachers' reference. Teachers may consider the knowledge, concepts and skills involved in the assessment items and select appropriate items for the classes or groups they teach.

Please be reminded that the assessment items in the depository are mainly for schools' use in their internal assessment. When referring to and using such items to design assessment activities, teachers should consider their schools' curriculum planning and learning and teaching progress, and whether their students have the required knowledge and skills for answering the questions. Teachers may also use these items to design daily assessment or adapt them into discussion activities in class. After students have answered the questions, teachers should give feedback on their performance so as to enhance the efficacy of learning and achieve the goals of "assessment for learning"
